The choir was originally formed by a group of nurses at St Bartholomew’s Hospital conducted by Robert Anderson. The first performance, of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, took place at the hospital in June 1965.

The choir started to grow and within a few years was giving performances in prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Southwark Cathedral and Westminster City Hall. Barts Choir has continued to develop and is now an established part of the world of amateur choral singing in London.

Our most recent venture was a workshop performance of Bach's B Minor Mass with baroque orchestra at St James' Church, Sussex Gardens with over 300 singers.

Here are some of the highlights of the last 50 years:

  • 1965: first performance of Handel's Messiah at St Bartholomew the Great
  • 1973: a concert at St Paul's Cathedral to mark the 850th anniversary of the founding of St Bartholomew's Hospital
  • 1975: Barts Choir's first performance at the Royal Albert Hall
  • 1982: choir tour to Egypt with a performance of Alexander's Feast in the Ambassador's garden, Cairo
  • 1985: Verdi's Requiem in Amsterdam
  • 1987: Dream of Gerontius in Köln
  • 1990: Mozart Mass in C Minor in Denmark
  • 2000: Mahler's 'Symphony of a Thousand' at the Royal Albert Hall
  • 2012: performing in the Olympic stadium at the Paralympic Opening Ceremony
  • 2016: accompanying Boy George for Channel 4 programme Stand Up to Cancer

If you enjoy singing with the Main Choir and feel like stretching yourself to perform a more challenging repertoire, do consider joining Barts Chamber Choir. Rehearsals focus on the interpretation of the music, the sound of the choir and developing the overall performance. There are normally 4 or 5 rehearsals for each concert and you will be expected to have learnt your part in your own time before the first rehearsal.

To join, you must pass a straightforward singing test. The purpose is to test tone, basic intonation and rhythm, to confirm which voice part you sing, and ensure we have a good blend of voices. The tests will be taken by Ivor and Chris and last about five minutes. During the test you will be asked to sing a short piece of music of your own choosing and to do a few exercises such as sight-reading, repeating a phrase played by Chris or singing scales or arpeggios.

The next Chamber Choir concert will be in the Spring term and recruitment for new members will start in January. Look out for announcements in the Monday notes and at rehearsals.
