Monday Notes - 21 October 2019

Hello all

Thank you for your patience at the last rehearsal with the Dixit Dominus work we did.

Here is a message from Katie in light of some of the confusion and frustration that was overheard/reported.

Thanks, everyone, for your continued fantastic efforts with the Monteverdi. It really feels like we’re starting to bring the music to life, and transforming the sound quality of the choir while we’re at it!

With regard to some of the nitty-gritty score frustrations, please heed this: ALL voice part allocations / re-allocations and changes are Ivor’s decisions.

Some decisions he sets in stone, others he wants to experiment with. I will campaign for more of the former, going forward on future projects, in order that we all have as much clarity as possible and so that you don’t risk learning a part only to have to swap to another one. I recognise that this is both confusing and needlessly time-consuming.

Once you have all double-checked Evelina’s voice part notes, I will, in future Monteverdi rehearsals, refer to each stave by its name (e.g. Sextus, Quintus, A, B1 etc) rather than who is singing the part. That way you can self-identify based on which part Ivor has asked you to sing at any given moment. Be sure you know what your stave is called in each movement please - it may be worth marking it on each page as a reminder.

I’m looking forward to making more of this wonderful music with you next week. Keep up the great work!”

The post-rehearsal pub is Ye Old Mitre (City Temple) & The Volunteer (St. Cyprian's)

Saturday rehearsal - 26 October 2019

Please do come along if you can! It is an intensive day of singing but it is rewarding to really get stuck into this work and accelerate our learning, not to mention the chance to socialise a bit more...

We will be holding a 'New Member' lunch as well as a Bake Sale for our charity this year: Inner City Centre, so please do bring your delicious bakes. The charity are very appreciative of our fund-raising efforts for their cause.

When we are at St. Cyprian's, I think everyone is aware that a bit more work is needed to set up the space. I would particularly appreciate it if some members could arrive early to support this. The more that do, the easier and quicker it is for everyone. After all we are #TeamBarts!

Rehearsal Layout

At this coming Monday's rehearsal (21st) we'll be rehearsing:

  • Ave Maris Stella
  • Laetatus Sum
  • Magnificat

We will now be rehearsing in Ivor's preferred - and likely the performance - layout of double choir. Please see picture.

And do continue to move forward in the rehearsal space. I do understand that we don't want to seat ourselves in too cramped a style but there shouldn't be any significant gaps in the sections. If, 5 mins before rehearsal starts, you see a gap, please move forwards/sideways to close it.

If you can, please leave a seat/space at the end of each row to allow for latecomers to take a seat without disrupting others too much.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Learning Resources

Thank you to those who 'fessed up and accessed the Score Notes I wrote following my mini-rant announcement on Monday.

I do understand that life is busy and time is limited to be adding to your personal singing preparations, but it is important to all 280(ish) of us this term that we commit to preparing as best we can.Thank you for doing this.

I have created a new document of changes here.

If you have any problems opening these documents - either linked here or on our website - please let me know.

And do keep listening to the recordings linked on the Learning Resources page of the website. The more familiar we get with the rhythms and tempo changes, the more confident we all get in making this beautiful music.

*And keep embracing your inner Italian in how the text is pronounced :-)*

I will endeavour to save Monday Notes to the website each week now so you can look back at previous versions, should you wish to.

Subscriptions

To date 86% of members have paid their sub so thank you very much to those who have.

If you haven't yet, please register and/or login to our website and pay via the subscriptions heading under the 'Members' tab..

Please remember that you need to have paid your subscription - which pays for rehearsal costs - at least 4 weeks prior to performance in order to be eligible to perform (should you wish to).

If you are no longer singing this term and haven't yet informed your voice rep, could you please drop them a quick note letting them know via email? Many Thanks.

And if you are singing with us, please do confirm whether you are 1 or 2 in your voice part as well as your preferred/available dates if you are singing with us in performance.

Monteverdi Vespers tickets

Book your tickets on our website (or on the Cadogan Hall website).

Tickets can also be ordered at rehearsal from Andrew or Maggie and orders can then be collected & paid for via cash/cheque/debit or credit card in the following week's rehearsal.

If you are planning to book tickets in person, please do start booking them now if you can. This will reduce congestion in the process closer to performance if/when we get a surge of bookings.

Please arrive early at rehearsal if you are collecting & paying for tickets as there will be limited time in the break to do this.

It is really important to begin building momentum in promoting our concerts

I will be sending out a promotional email in the coming week to all of our contacts to encourage people to save the date(s) and/or book. When you receive it, please feel free to forward this message on to your friends/family/other contacts encouraging them to come along.

Thanks everyone. Have a good weekend and see you on Monday.
