Monteverdi Vespers – Autumn 2026

You can find rehearsal recordings for individual parts at John Fletcher Music (free but you need to set up an account to use the website), Choralia (free), Cyberbass (free but be aware that the page is marked ‘incomplete’ and it’s not clear what’s missing!) and Choraline (£13.99 – available as CD or download, which some people are more comfortable using). All use MP3 files which you can listen to on your phone or sound-equipped computer without needing special software.

Each website has only one set of rehearsal tracks, despite the fact that there are a number of different editions of the Vespers out there, so you may need to pick out the bits relevant to you by following along carefully with your score. However, all the sound files include a timer so you can easily note down where particular phrases start and end, if you need to.

If you are not familiar with these websites, it’s worth trying them out to see which you prefer: some allow for variable speed of playback (good for when you’re struggling with a tricky passage) some include an approximation of singing the words (useful if you can’t work out how the words fit the notes), some include a track with all parts (useful when you get confident enough to want to sing against other parts).

The Dixit dominus chants – Ivor mentioned on Monday that this recording (John Eliot Gardiner, English Baroque Soloists, Monteverdi Choir – recorded 1989) has the chants exactly how he wants them. The movement begins about 2.15 minutes into the recording.
